REVIEWS AFTER ALICJA KOKOSIŃSKA’S DEBUT AS A SET DESIGNER FOR G. DONIZETTI’S DON PASQUALE AT THE KRAKOW OPERA
“… The set design of 23-year-old debutant Alicja Kokosińska filled with bold colors and inspired by Pompeii, worked out very well. She proposed an interesting procedure with turning the floor into a chessboard, I also liked the Roman atrium she has created.” Mateusz Borkowski

“… Another well played part in the show was the set design by debutant Alicja Kokosińska. The artist decided to go back to the roots and to build the set, instead of using multimedia projections. Her idea was successful enough, to cause a round of applause as the curtain went up to reveal the set for the scene of a Ernesto’s “tryst” with Norina.” Magdalena Grzybowska

“… Anyway Donizetti in Jerzy Stuhr’s version is blending a great deal of dramatic theatre into operatic convention. A very skillful blending. Hence numerous tricks with the convention “theatre in theatre” – e. g. when Don Pasuale’s home is decorated with new furniture, and muslin curtains stretch through the big staircase. It is also when a day with a milliner becomes a fashion show, in which we can recognize John Galliano and Karl Lagerfeld. Baroque opera is not old and unattractive – it can have modern contexts and references inscribed into the performance with respect for the music and libretto. It is worthy to notice, that in general the tutti scenes come out brilliantly in the produciton. Visually they marvel with their choreographic adjustment to action and space on the stage.” Łukasz Gazur

“… The set design by Alicja Kokosińska made a very good impression on me – but only in the second part of the performance – the idea with flower beds trimmed in the form of chess – outstanding, in the context of the action, which after all is a sort of gameplay.” Ania Kańska Małachowska

“… It is noteworthy to mention the excellent, very well thought through and impressive set design by young artist Alicja Kokosińska. With her stylistics she inscribed perfectly in the traditional theatrical atmosphere – full of momentum, balanced half way through literal and imaginary and without popular multimedia projections. Especially the garden scene made an electrifying impression – unveiling of this scenario caused a sigh of delight in the audience.” Iwona Ramotowska
